Bulky Waste Collection

We offer a separate service for larger items like fridges and other waste too bulky for regular collections.

Large waste items (bulky items) and green waste are not collected on your normal refuse collection rounds. You can get rid of these items free of charge by taking them to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Site (HWRS), which is managed by East Sussex County Council.

However, we do provide a chargeable service to remove bulky items and green waste.

We Can Collect

Cookers, washing machines, tumble dryers, bed bases and / or mattresses, wardrobes, cupboards, chest of drawers, microwave ovens, televisions / videos, green waste, tables, chairs, baths / WCs and settees, etc.

We Cannot Collect

Treated fencing, sheds, decking (pressure treated / coated with wood preservatives), gas bottles, asbestos, car batteries, builders' rubble, soil, gypsum plasterboard and other hazardous waste.

Your nearest Household Waste Recycling Site (HWRS) will accept household hazardous waste.

Collection Charges

Quotation

We can quote separately for other items. Please contact Customer Services and ask for a quotation. The Operational Management Team will aim to make contact with the customer by phone to arrange a visit and, if agreed, a collection, on receipt of payment, within 10 working days.

Arranging Collection

Please note telephone quotes and prices stated here will be the prices charged unless:

The health and safety of our staff members is at risk of being compromised e.g. there is a general obstruction to access, uneven / slippery ground, steep gradient, poor lighting of the area, excessive weight / size of bulky item or a long distance to carry very heavy items;
There are access problems. All items must be easily available outside the property in a location close to the road where a refuse collection vehicle can safely and legally park for the time period it will take to remove the items.

We therefore reserve the right not to collect and re-quote under such circumstances. If you choose not to go ahead with a new quote your money will be refunded. If you receive a quote it will be valid for 30 days, after which we will remove it from our records.

Payment

If you wish to make payment over the phone you can contact Customer Services. Alternatively you can pay by cheque with your name and address on the back of the cheque, along with a reference number, given to you from Customer Services.

In person, payment by cheque, postal order or Debit / Visa / Master Card, can be made at our office at 4 Fisher Street, Lewes (with the reference number given to you from Customer Services). You will be added to the next collection day on receipt of payment. Payment by cash will not be accepted. Please note that an additional charge will apply if you make payment using the Visa / Master Card which is 1.50%

For health and safety reasons customers are politely requested not to visit the Robinson Road depot in Newhaven due to movements of heavy vehicles and there are no designated facilities for members of the public.

Collection Guide

We will collect bulky waste items from outside the property where possible.

We will also collect from a garage but the following conditions apply:

The collection crew are accompanied by the resident(s) whilst they collect the waste.
The waste is easily accessible.
The customer agrees that we will not accept liability for loss or damage.
The customer accepts that if the crew cannot easily remove the waste without risking damage or injury they will not remove thee waste and the charge for collection will be reimbursed.

Under almost all circumstances we will not enter property. If a resident has a real and substantial difficulty they should arrange with their friends, relatives or neighbours to assist them. If none of this is possible they should look at the Yellow Pages under house clearance and see if a local company can do the collection. We do not advise or endorse companies who could provide the service. Please see "Your Responsibility" below for further information.

However, in extremely rare circumstances we may be required to enter a property if, for example the resident is severely disabled. This would depend on the nature and location of the waste.

We will not:

Disconnect any appliance.
Push appliances across a floor.
Pull appliances from where they are sitting under worktops.
Carry heavy items up or down stairs.
Alternatively residents should try and contact a reputable voluntary organisation to see if their volunteers are able to assist in placing the items in a suitable area for collection. As soon as this is done the resident can call back to the helpdesk and place an official order.

If your appliance is in good working order perhaps you would consider donating it to a worthy cause? An environmental organisation called Furniture Now! may be interested in taking your furniture and appliances away. Alternatively, local organisations may be able to remove unwanted furniture by collecting and supplying it to people on low incomes.

Your Responsibility

You should be careful when disposing of waste via third-party companies. Unscrupulous companies who fly-tip your waste could result in you getting a fine of up to £5,000. Our Householder's Responsibilities page gives further details on how to avoid problems.
