We are reminding residents to ensure your vote for the forthcoming general election by registering now.
A UK parliamentary general election has been called for 6 May 2010.
This means the public will go to the polls to elect 650 members of parliament (MPs). A timetable will now be followed, including the dissolution of parliament on Monday 12 April 2010.
The Lewes constituency candidates standing for election will be announced on Wednesday 21 April 2010 following the closure of nominations. You can read more about members of parliament and how their represent the Lewes district in our Guide to elections page.
There is still time to be added to the electoral register if you have not already done so. The deadline to be register is 5pm on Tuesday 20 April 2010.
You can apply to vote now by completing the forms on the About My Vote website or contact our Electoral Services office.
If you have registered to receive a postal vote, these will be distributed following the close of candidate nominations.
You can expect to receive your card from Wednesday 21 April 2010. These should be completed and returned before 10pm on polling day, Thursday 6 May 2010.
You can return your postal votes by mail as instructed. Alternatively, they can be dropped off in-person at your local polling station.
If you are on the electoral register and have requested to vote in-person at a polling station, you will receive your polling cards in the post before 16 April 2010.
Your letter will contain details of which polling station you will be required to report to. This will be printed on your polling card.
Following the close of the polls at 10pm on Thursday 6 May 2010, the count to determine the representative of the Lewes constituency seat will immediately take place in Lewes.
A result will be declared once the count has been verified and expected to be called at approximately 3am on Friday 7 May 2010.
