Council Tax set for 2010/2011

Houses in DitchlingA rise of 2.5% in Lewes District Council's element of the Council tax will help maintain a package of service improvements for local residents.

The Council will continue to work to improve the waste management, recycling and street cleansing services within the District as well as working to support the local economy through initiatives and targeted action with the business community. We also have ambitious plans to reduce CO2 emissions from council offices and buildings in 2010 and beyond.

The rise is equivalent to an extra 9 pence per week for a Band D property.

Before setting the new level of tax, councillors consulted with representatives of the business community and groups of residents from its Citizens’ panel.

Council Leader Ann De Vecchi said, “We are going to continue to support the local economy, tourism and employment during challenging financial circumstances. To ease the council tax burden we have set ourselves a savings target of £190,000 for the next two financial years.

Recycling remains a priority for the Council and we will be extending glass collections for the remaining properties in Lewes.

The year ahead will be challenging for the whole community and we will achieve our savings target through efficiency measures”.

Service improvements next year will include:

Residents’ council tax bills are made up of the budget needs of East Sussex County Council, the Sussex Police Authority, East Sussex Fire Authority and their local town or parish council. The East Sussex County Council portion of the council tax bill will be increased by 2.7%, Sussex Police Authority has agreed to increase its part of the council tax by 2.7% and East Sussex Fire Authority by 2.2%. The average town and parish precept increases by 5.8%.
