A Dog Is Not Just For Christmas

Animal Warden with dog wearing a Christmas suitIt's that time of year again; more puppies are abandoned at Christmas than any other time of year.

Puppies make cute, adorable Christmas presents, but the reality of owning and caring for a dog proves too much for some people. It is a sad fact that one in 50 puppies bought each year are soon abandoned after Christmas.

Overcome with the responsibility that it takes to bring up a dog and have it become part of the family, this forces some people to give up on the puppy. Rather than ask for help, many people feel ashamed and become irresponsible and abandon the puppy to the streets.

We encourage families who want a dog to consider a rescue dog. Rescue centres can offer advice on all aspects of dog care. Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare near Ringmer, or the Dog’s Trust in Shoreham can offer help and advice.
