An employer is responsible for ensuring compliance with health and safety law for all their staff and visitors.
The enforcement of health and safety at work legislation is split between the Health & Safety Executive and local authorities like us.
Our health and safety team promote and maintain standards of health, safety and welfare within the district.
We inspect business premises to ensure conditions are satisfactory and safe. We provide information to increase general awareness of health and safety.
We are responsible for checking offices, shops, residential care homes, warehouses & distributors, recreation facilities and childcare providers.
The Health and Safety Executive are responsible for inspecting hospitals, nursing homes, schools, mines and quarries, agriculture and horticulture businesses.
Employers should ensure that they are aware of the legal requirements applicable to their business/operations under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
The Act is the basis of health and safety law within Great Britain. It sets out the general duties for employers towards their employees and visitors.
The duties should be exercised 'so far as is reasonably practicable', i.e. the degree of risk in a particular job or workplace needs to be balanced against the time, trouble, cost and physical difficulty of taking measures to avoid or reduce the risk.
