10:10 Commitment

10:10 is a national campaign aiming to cut carbon by 10% in 2010. Lewes District Council is signed up to this commitment.

1010 is a national campaign aiming to cut carbon by 10% in 2010. The concept was devised by the - director of the film ‘age of stupid’. 1010 was officially launched in September 2009.

Lewes District Council signed up to the commitment in January 2010, as the Council has an excellent environmental and sustainability record we were confident that we had the knowledge and expertise to meet our target. 1010 was a no brainer really – going above and beyond the required targets is something that comes naturally to us!

A 10% reduction for us means we have agreed to cut our carbon by 285 tonnes in the financial year of 2010/11 – that’s the equivalent of 6 Sydney Opera Houses!!

What we are aiming to do

We are aiming to not only reduce our CO2 but also support staff and residents in making the choices that lead to CO2 reduction and save money and waste at the same time.

How we are doing this

A list of easy solutions were approved by Cabinet and these are being installed including solar hot water at our Robinson Road depot and Voltage Optimisation at Southover House.

We have also enlisted the help of some volunteers, known as Eco-monitors, within each department who will help to spread the word and motivate staff to save energy,  water and reduce waste throughout our offices while also thinking about the environmental impacts of purchases.

Over the coming months we will be putting together a project-plan for subsequent measures to take us to our 1010 target and beyond!
