Nature Volunteers, We Need You

VolunteersVolunteers are needed to join the Lewes Railway Land Meadow Minders. Maybe you'd like to join them?

Once a month a of group local people join our Community Rangers to help look after Lewes Railway Land Local Nature Reserve.

This Green Flag awarded nature reserve is just minutes from the busy shopping streets in the heart of Lewes; but could be a world away. The woods, reed beds and meadows boast kingfishers, frogs, reptiles and a profusion of wild flowers.

As the summer fades the work on the nature reserve is needed more than ever.  Through the autumn and winter plants and bushes will be cut back to encourage a greater variety of wildlife. There’s also maintenance to keep the footpaths in good condition for visitors and other jobs to do.

Community Ranger, Thyone Outram said: “Come and join us for some fresh air and good company for a healthy afternoon working outdoors in the knowledge that you’ve helped a wonderful nature reserve".

To get involved, all you need is sturdy footwear or wellington boots and a drink for when you work up a sweat. All the tools are provided that you will need. Everyone is welcome, young or old, but please contact the Community Rangers before so they know the amount of equipment to bring.

The meeting point is at the Railway Land gate on Railway Lane, Lewes on the 1st Sunday of each month at 1.30pm. The next meet is on Sunday 5 September. If you would like to join in, please contact Community Ranger Dan Ross by phoning 01273 484408 or emailing dan.ross@lewes.gov.uk.
