Car club up and running in Lewes town

Norman Baker MP with one of the Commonwheels cars Residents and businesses of Lewes town have a new way to travel around in addition to using public transport, cycling or walking.

Lewes now has its own car club which can be used to get around the district and beyond.

In partnership with Commonwheels there are now 2 Ford Fiesta econetic cars that can be accessed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by members of the car club. Joining the car club is easy. There is a one off joining fee of £25 with no annual membership fee. The car can be booked over the phone or through the website for a minimum of 30 minutes at a time.

The vehicles are located in dedicated off street car park spaces in Pinwell Rd and East Street car parks.

As a member you only pay for what you use. Each time you drive the car, you pay an hourly rate for the duration of the trip, and a small mileage fee. This covers everything, so you need never worry about fuel, insurance, MOTs, tax or maintenance costs again.

The scheme is open to anyone between the ages of 18 and 75 who has a full valid driving licence that they have held for at least 12 months.

Residents who join can book online or by telephone. Bookings can be made a few minutes in advance and also up to 12 months in advance to ensure peace of mind for important engagements or regular trips. The cars have on-board computers so people can extend, or make new bookings, during use, by phone.

There is a one-off joining fee of £25 and the hourly rate is £4. Mileage fee is 0.15pence per mile. Daily rate (24 hrs) = £36. Overnight rate (8pm to 8am) = £12. Minimum monthly charge £5. Returnable insurance deposit = £150 or free if you sign up to direct debit.
