2012: A Year Of Celebration

Celebrating 2012

2012 will be a year of celebration as the UK commemorates the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and celebrates the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic games.

Across the Lewes District a range of events and activities will take place during 2012 focussing on the three significant celebrations:

Olympic Torch

Olympic Torch Relay

Lewes town is delighted to be chosen as a community on route to welcome the Olympic Torch Relay on Tuesday 17th July 2012 as it travels between the overnight stops at Brighton and Hastings. We will be planning a welcome event to coincide with its journey through the town and details will be announced in the new year.

We are working in partnership with local communities and organisations to celebrate local sporting and cultural events and activities taking place between May & September 2012.

Here's how you can become involved:

Promote your events

Add your local event to our online listing to promote it to local residents & visitors.

Celebrate In Your Local Community

As part of your local celebrations you may wish to think about organising an event or dressing your community. For example, you could encourage your community to adopt red, white and blue planting schemes, or decorate community venues to coincide with local events. Please ensure that you have obtained the necessary event licence and road closures when planning any event.

Diamond Jubilee Beacons

On Monday 4th June, the aim is to light 2012 (or more) beacons across the UK to mark the historic occasion of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Register your community to take part in this historic event.

Diamond Jubilee Woods

To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee the Woodland Trust aim to plant 6 million trees in partnership with local communities to create a lasting legacy to mark this historic occasions. Find out how your community can become involved:

London 2012 Local Leaders

The Local Leaders initiative invites volunteers to promote awareness of the Games in their communities and organise Olympic celebrations next year. By signing up to the Local Leaders scheme you will receive lots of free material for organising an event in you local community.

Get Set Schools Resource

Get Set Torch Relay Resource is aimed at teachers working with 3 - 16 year olds to support learning around the history of Olympic Torch Relays and the design of the London 2012 Relay & Torch. Further resources will be available next year, designed to encourage schools to think about and plan celebration ideas to welcome the Olympic Flame and show support to the Torchbearers next summer.

Walk the World

As part of the Cultural Olympiad, Walk the World is a project challenging local communities to find connections to the 206 Olympic & Paralympic Nations – encouraging people to explore their local area. If your community have a connection then add the details to the website to encourage walks in the Lewes District.
